Tanning equipment
There has always been some back-and-forth talk between
manufacturers of tanning equipment and the scientific community. While
makers of tanning equipment insist that tanning beds do not cause harm
and actually have some health benefits, many health officials have disagreed.
Now, the Canadian Cancer Society would like to see legislation that
bans teens from using tanning beds.
The legislation would legislate tanning equipment use just like tobacco
products and alcohol are legislated. Under the proposed legislation,
teams would not be allowed to tan in salons without explicit permission
from their parents. If this law is passed teams could only get their
bronze on by using sprays, lotions and natural sunlight.
The Canadian Cancer Society strongly believes that there is a connection
between overuse of tanning equipment and cancer. Underlying the proposed
legislation is the belief that teens are not able to make appropriate
decisions for themselves concerning their health. If the bill were to
pass it would not have a major impact on the overall tanning industry
though it could pave the way for additional consumer concern in the
US.
